Manchester Concert Series
Join us on Saturday, May 4th at 4:00 PM for a new installment of our Manchester Concert Series. We are excited to welcome The Virginians Barbershop Chorus.
Originally organized in the Fall of 1945 with 24 members of local quartets, the Richmond affiliate of SPEBSQSA received its official charter from the society on December 6, 1952, with almost 40 members. Its charter party was attended by approximately 150 people. Dean Snyder from SPEBSQSA (and founding member of the Alexandria Harmonizers) presided over the ceremony to hand the charter to then chapter president, Dr. Ralph M. Roberts.
The Richmond affiliate started proceedings to get an official SPEBSQSA charter in September 1952, and open up its membership to men who wanted to sing in an ensemble chorus. Previously, the group had been entirely made up of barbershop quartets. In 2019, the Barbershop Harmony Society began a program called “Everyone in Harmony” which the Virginians Chorus adopted opening its membership to both men and women. The Virginians chorus is the principal performing group from the Richmond chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (based in Nashville) a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity. The Virginians is comprised of over 40 active members. On a yearly average they participate in 15 or more varied performance venues in the greater Richmond area.
The suggested donation for admission is $10.00 per attendee in support of the performers, along with one non-perishable food item for the Food Closet. This event is open to the community, so please invite your family and friends.

What is the manchester concert series?
In 2022 members of Southminster launched a new endeavor. The Manchester Concert series was designed to allow Southminster to reach out to our community through music, inviting different groups to put on concerts in the Sanctuary. After a successful inaugural year and three concerts, we are carrying the Manchester Concert Series on into 2023-2024!
Each concert will begin at 4:00 PM with doors opening at 3:30 pm. We will be asking attendees for a $10 donation for the performers and a food item donation for our Southminster Food Closet. These concerts will be open to the community and will hopefully serve as an outreach opportunity for our members to extend the right hand of fellowship to visitors. Should these concerts be well received, more will follow in the next calendar year.
